Hafnerei Glentleiten

"I always wanted my own workshop," says master potter Doris Schickel in a soft, but friendly and sparkling manner that reveals her Rhineland roots. Her roots have been allowed to continue growing in Upper Bavaria for a long time, and in particular in her pottery workshop in the Glentleiten open-air museum near Großweil. A passion for clay steeped in history, which Doris and her team fully utilise to create a very special offering.

Pottery & Living Workshop

The salesroom in the historic museum building not only offers a wealth of handmade ceramics, but is at the same time a lively show workshop with a varied programme of courses. "We now provide so many opportunities for children and adults to join in and participate; I certainly had not expected that it would all develop into this." However, this is exactly what makes the difference today. After prior registration, visitors can find themselves sitting at the wheel or booked on creative courses ranging from crockery painting through porcelain decorating right up to scored decoration techniques. But the Hafnerei is also a true paradise in which to browse for beautiful things: In front of the old farmhouse, the colourful garden baubles give a foretaste of the vibrant range to be found inside. Although Doris is constantly expanding her repertoire with new glazes and products, there is a constant tendency towards original forms: "Many people don't know the old Bavarian crockery anymore, but we still make it. These include traditional pieces such as the large Weidling bowl, the so-called "Pfitzauf" baking mould as well as the "Topfenseiher" for making your own quark and cheese." If you want to get a first impression without a tour of the museum, you can find some seasonal items as well as the Doris' Inser Hoamat product range in the museum shop, which is free to enter. A visit to the Glentleiten is always worthwhile, because it offers many human moments that Doris appreciates so much: "Recently, children came in who had obviously learnt from their parents that the inhabitants of the museum houses were long dead. When they saw me in the workshop, they exclaimed in amazement: “Mum, one of them has survived!" There is a lot to discover.
